EngageNY Grade 5 ELA Module 2b, Unit 2: Case Study: The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth
In Unit 2, students continue to build their reading and writing skills and their understanding of how new or improved technologies are developed to meet the needs of society through a case study of Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of television. As they read Kathleen Krull’s The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth, groups work together to determine the gist of a section during a first read, then complete a second read to make inferences, create a summary, and define vocabulary terms. For a Mid-unit assessment, learners complete multiple-choice and short and long-answer questions on comprehension, inferences, vocabulary, and text structure. To prepare for the module’s final essay, individuals practice paraphrasing, selecting, and using quotes to explain relationships. They complete the unit by crafting an introductory paragraph, provide evidence for their thinking in proof paragraphs, and write a conclusion paragraph.
