EngageNY Grade 8 ELA Module 2a: Working With Evidence: Taking a Stand

Collector: Ann V.

In the three units in Grade 8, ELA Module 2A, eighth-graders continue their study of the theme of taking a stand. In Unit 1, scholars develop their close reading skills as they examine speeches of real people taking a stand. They consider a speaker’s perspective and analyze how writers craft an argument. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, serves as the anchor text for the module. Readers study Atticus Finch’s actions and words, collecting evidence for their end of Unit 2 argument essay. As a final performance task for Unit 3, class members select a key quote from the novel and craft a Readers Theater performance that reveals how the quote relates to the theme of taking a stand.
