Analyzing the Discriminant

This is a detailed lesson plan that focuses on using the discriminant to determine the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation. The lesson begins with learners investigating similarities and differences among graphs of four quadratic equations. After discussing their findings, they work in groups to complete exercises designed to develop the connections between the value of the discriminant of an equation, the nature of its roots, and the number of x-intercepts of its graph. The resource includes a good number of follow-up exercises to help solidify concepts. It also includes two optional PowerPoint presentations.
