End-of-Year Practice Test (Grade 6 ELA/Literacy)

With the end of the year quickly approaching it's time to find out exactly how much your sixth graders have learned. Specifically designed for the Common Core ELA standards, this practice test gives students five reading passages, ranging from fictional narratives and poetry to expository texts, and assesses their reading comprehension skills with a series of multiple choice questions.

Instructional Ideas
  • Provide this practice assessment as a way for students to learn and apply different test-taking strategies
  • Once finished, have children correct their assessments with a partner or in small groups, inviting them to discuss any mistakes they made
Classroom Considerations
  • Schedule time for your class to use the computer lab so they can practice taking online assessments
  • While the reading passages are the same for the paper and online tests, there are minor differences in the questions
  • A large-print version of the test is available for students with visual impairments, but depending on your printing capabilities, it may be difficult to create documents this size
  • This resource is only available on an unencrypted HTTP website. It should be fine for general use, but don’t use it to share any personally identifiable information
  • Multiple choice questions each have two parts, requiring students to identify textual evidence that supports their answers
  • Both print and computer-based versions of the test are included
  • Answer keys are included for both digital and paper versions of the assessment, as well as a generic rubric for assessing student learning
