Family and Friends is the theme of a unit consisting of English language development lessons. Reinforce language proficiency, particularly in family vocabulary, basic needs, feelings, short vowel sounds, blending, reading high frequency words, clusters, possessives, and complete sentences. Learning opportunities are conducted through grand discussion, picture cards, poems, book talks, and drawing family portraits.

  • When discussing celebrations, find a common or choose multiple celebrations that the class can celebrate together
  • Invite pupils to role play how to make friends; discuss the process and vocabulary used

  • This unit was designed as part of the Houghton Mifflin English language arts curriculum, but can be used independently, or alongside with another curriculum
  • Some of the curriculum's material is not included; however, the remaining ESL lessons can be implemented with modifications
