This highly personalized activity puts the names of the learners in the center of the math investigation. As each person calculates their own name value based on a given code, they get practice in algorithms and in estimating square roots without a calculator. As they arrange themselves according to these values, they work on mastering the ordering of rational and irrational numbers. Add in a healthy dash of friendly competition and group work, and you have a recipe for a great review or skill practice activity.

  • Consider using the provided lesson extensions of having the class investigate what would happen if students were added to the roster, or create their own ordering codes
  • Give learners rational and irrational values and have them back out possible letter combinations and names using the code rules, or have them compete to find names with the highest or lowest values
  • Revisit activity and create new codes as the class learns about other kinds of functions, such as trigonometric, exponential, etc.
  • For fun, allow learners to create hierarchies of pop culture or historical characters, using these coding rules or ones they create
