Use Phrasing to Improve Fluency

Encourage reading fluency with a lesson that examines the proper use of propositional and introductory phrases. After listening to and discussing an example of someone having trouble reading aloud, scholars obtain a leveled reading passage. Pupils complete a read-aloud in front of a peer who evaluates them on their completion. Using the same passage, participants underline prepositional and introductory phrases in preparation for a larger practice of the same skill. Participants choral read a passage to close the lesson. Assessment is taken one-on-one with a new reading passage.

  • Invite class members to record their read-aloud on a device for them to replay and examine their performance 
  • Use participants' independent reading books as leveled passages
  • Get parent and guardians involved—send reading instruction home for family members to practice reading and boost fluency
