Where Are Our Commons?

What are commons and how do we take care of them? This is the driving question in which scholars answer through grand conversations, brainstorm sessions, and small group field trips to collect data. Once your class has completed this activity, the commons of your school community will be common knowledge, as well as how to use them appropriately and keep them from running out.

Instructional Ideas
  • Hold a pencil contest in your classroom to observe how well your class can keep track of their personal pencil 
  • Prior to teaching this lesson, assign a small group to design a floor plan, or map, of the school to be used during instruction. If time does not permit this step, provide the preprinted school map from the office 
  • Create a flipped classroom assignment by assigning the video link to be watched at home before the lesson takes place in the classroom 
Classroom Considerations
  • Remind learners to keep their work in a safe place as they will be referencing, adding, and changing information as the lesson continues 
  • This lesson requires small groups of scholars to discover parts of the school on their own; inform other teachers and ask for assistance in behavior management if the group is nearby
